An open invitation to all Retailers- the 1st ever 901 Meta-Review
Last Updated on Tuesday, 27 January 2009 06:31 Written by leaford Tuesday, 27 January 2009 06:31
901 Meta-review
Since there’s been interest expressed at e-cigarette-forum.com in seeing me compare the RN4075, DSE901, and KR306 head to head, I was thinking of going one step further: A meta-review of as many retailer’s 901’s as I can gather. The main event will be the actual vape-off between the three known models, and any others we can find. Next, a quick 1 or 2 minute spotlight for each, highlighting anything that makes them stand out, and giving web address and price on-screen, and last an overview of available accessories.
Other than the head to head match, this is not a performance review, more of a survey of the market, so there will be no need for an evaluation period, and it can be done quickly once the cast is assembled. If the response overwhelms a 15-20 minute or so video, I can break it into parts by region, or model, or whatever works.
All the e-cigs could be provided as parts, one atomizer and battery each, to keep costs down, the accessories would probably cover the extra chargers I’d need. Or if anyone wanted to supply complete kits anyway, I would include showing the packaging in their spotlight, and then turn those sets around as contest prizes on my site, doorprizes for future members meetings, etc.
Any retailer is invited to participate, just send me an e-mail at 901metareview@e-smoker-forever.com. I will crosspost this notice on my site, all english language forums, and via e-mail to select retailers I’ve worked with in the past. Feel free to crosspost or pass the word along, especially to foreign language forums and retailers. In order to provide time for responses, I will target the last week of February, but that’s flexible.
If this works out, I will do a penstyle meta-review further down the road.
Oh, and any help anyone can offer in translating this invitation into French, Dutch, Spanish, and Thai, would be gratefully appreciated.

Ask Leaford
Last Updated on Sunday, 25 January 2009 01:52 Written by leaford Sunday, 25 January 2009 01:52
When I first started doing reviews I really underestimated how many people would be contacting me privately to ask me questions. At first I didn’t really think I was a good Q&A guy. And I had never volunteered for that, darn it, I just wanted to do reviews.
But in hindsight, it was inevitable people would want to pick my brains. And what am I doing by doing my reviews if not holding myself out as an expert? So I am bowing graciously to the inevitable.
Send me your questions, your queries, your huddled curiosity yearning to be answered. Send these, the homeless, the unanswered, to me. I vape my e-cig by the golden door!
Post your questions in the comments below. I can’t promise to answer every one, but I will try to answer as many as possible, and those of interest will become blog topics.
And the rest of the community should feel free to jump in and answer, too. I can’t be an expert in everything, after all.

The Who What and Where of Smoking Everywhere, Smoke Everywhere, and Smoking Anywhere?
Last Updated on Sunday, 25 January 2009 08:34 Written by leaford Sunday, 25 January 2009 08:34
There have been an outrageous amount of complaints about a vendor using the name Smoking Everywhere both online and in kiosks at the mall. Bad products, worse service, no refunds, refused exchanges, sometimes never even getting shipped. Obviously, we need to know who they are and avoid them, and let others know to avoid them, too. But there are actually two OTHER companies using similar names, and it seems that consumers are getting them confused with each other. One of them is actually a good company and is frequently being unfairly smeared by association with Smoking Everywhere.
So, I’ve looked into getting it sorted out, and here’s what I’ve found.
First off, there’s the “vile culprit”, Smoking Everywhere, LLC. They describe themselves as “a Florida based company pioneering in electronic smoking products,” who have “both Resellers and Store Locations in Major Malls around the country.”
Their websites are www.smokingeverywhere.com and www.smoking-everywhere.com. They have Super-minis (the KR808 according to Parked), Classic Penstyles, E-Cigars, and an E-Pipe.
They have been featured on The Bob Rivers Show and on local news segments. The video clip of the local news show is a redirect site which links to a deeply discounted outlet of some sort.
Those are all the sites I was able to find of theirs, but if anyone knows of others, please e-mail me at the address at the bottom of the article.
Smoking Everywhere is the source of the complaints. Their main websites have outrageously expensive e-cigarettes, and make the usual exaggerated claims about cartridge and battery life. They claim to offer a warranty, but they state their no returns policy explicitly: “*Please note that as per our terms and conditions, we cannot accept returns on unwanted items once used.”
Next, there’s Smoke Anywhere, Inc., the owners of Smoke 51. Also based in Florida, they also have “specialty retail locations, including kiosks and smoke shops in malls.” Besides www.smoke51.com, they have the websites www.smokeeverywhere.com and www.smokeverywhere.com. There’s also a subsidiary company, www.greensmoke.com/, which also has the address www.thevaporcigs.com.
They don’t appear to be the source of the complaints, but becuase Smoke Everywhere and Smoking Everywhere are such somilar names, they get dragged into it by mistake quite frequently.
They are the exclusive US distributer of the Loong Totem v9, an exclusive arrangement they guard zalously. They have a reputation for bad forum behaviour, and some pretty deceptive statements on their website about other designs of e-cigarettes. As I say, they do not seem to be the major source of the complaints, although some people, like myself, aren’t happy with the quality of their batteries.
It is suspicious, though, that they are both located in Florida, both have mall kiosks, and both have similar web addresses, and a similar strategy of multiple similar websites. I do wonder if there is a more direct connection between them, but as far as I know, they are unrelated companies.
Lastly, there’s Smoking Anywhere, a Flanders, New Jersey company that resells the Njoy Rn4072 Penstyle, the Njoy E-Cigar, and the Njoy Npro Super-Mini, which I believe is a DSE-103 or similar. Their web address is www.smokinganywhere.com. They seem innocent of the mess, except for sharing the same name as Smoke 51’s parent company. However, they aren’t completely innocent; they make the usual exaggerated claims about cartridge and battery life, and claim to be FAA and TSA approved without any support for their claim.
I still want a bit more detail.
First, I can’t find a list of store or kiosk locations for either one. I’d like to start compiling one.
Second, These were all the web addresses I could find in a quick search, but I’d like to know if anyone else knows any others.
So, if anyone who can give me a store or kiosk location, or who knows of any additional web addresses, could please send that to: smoking-every-any-whatever@e-smoker-forever.com, I’d appreciate it.
And it might be useful to compile a list of complaints.
There’s more than one thread on the forums for complaints about them, I know, but those get unwieldy with all the comments about the complaints, and comments about the comments, and so on.
So, the comment section of this thread will be dedicated to complaints about Smoking Everywhere, LLC. IF you have a complaint about them, whether online or in the mall, please post your experience below.
[EDITED TO ADD:]
I just found out yesterday from ECF member Providence that Smoking Everywhere recently bought out Njoy, explaining the shocking decline of Njoy’s once legendary customer service.
A letter from Smoke Everywhere Distributer Frank Simotics, shared by Providence via www.e-cigarette-forum.com:
“Smoking Everywhere just bought out the second largest company in the US – Njoy.
…
Sincerely,
Frank Simotics”
The original is here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/5832-smokingeverywhere-bs-email-conversation.html
ECF forum member Lacey Underhill informed me via e-mail that, “GreenCig, Smoke51 and Smokeeverywhere are all hosted on the same servers. Greencig is also www.thevaporcig.com (possibly a reseller… I looked a bit more but again)
The other two, www.smokingeverywhere.com and www.smoking-everywhere.com, I find interesting that the same “person” Elicko Eli, appears to own them and hosts them on two different servers. He does a lot of press releases! Also note that in early press releases he went by the name Elicko Taieb.
When you look at the IP addresses… Greencig, Smoke51 and Smokeeverywhere are coming out of Dallas servers and smokingeverywhere is coming out of New York and Smoking-everywhere is coming out of Phoenix. (Which would be right since he is not hosting his sites on the same server).”
Which would seem to support that they are seperate entities, but is not conclusive.
I also have confirmed reports that some Smoking Everywhere Kiosks do indeed sell both Smoking Everywhere E-Cigarettes, AND Smoke 51 brand Loong Totem units. This could suggest a connection, but the mall kiosks are a franchised seperatly by both companies, so It’s likely just that some individual owners own both franchises.
The information gathering will continue, though, and if you have any information to add, please e-mail your tips to: smoking-every-any-whatever@e-smoker-forever.com.

Narrative review:
Smoke 51 is the exclusive Loong Totem v9 distributor for the US. The LTv9 is a departure from the usual e-cig design, and it’s big feature is the disposable combination atomizer and cartridge. Not only does this promise to solve the problem of atomizer failures, and eliminate the mess of refilling and dripping, the cartridges are claimed to last as long as two packs, and the vapor is supposed to be just amazing.
You pay for all those promises, at $150 for the full, 2-battery, starter kit, and $50 each for replacement batteries. But are all the claims true?
Well, the last one is definitely true, the vapor is amazing. Awesome, really! The most vapor I have seen any e-cig produce, with the possible exception of Trog’s Screwdriver, or a similar mod. And while it is true that cartridge changes are no muss and no fuss, the cartridge life in my estimation is only one pack, not two. Of course, that is still more than any other mini or penstyle. The promise of absolute atomizer reliability, though is the real disappointment, as I found there was a lot of variability in cartridge performance, and a high failure rate, about 20% that were just bad out of the box.
In terms of my usual ratings system, the score is very mixed. I give it a full 5 points for vapor production, and like the e-pipe it is really off the chart. 5-plus. The draw is fairly hard, though, and I give it a 3. It does vary a lot between cartridges, though, and in fairness, the hard draw is due as much to the batteries as the atomizers, but for consistencies sake I am not going to rearrange my system. That averages to 4 for the atomizer.
The battery performance and durability were very poor on the batteries I received. One of the two died after only a week. On the other, the LED began to fail to activate just recently, after about 3-4 weeks use. Battery life is acceptable, about what you’d expect from a mini, 70 5-second puffs or so, which scores a 2.5 out of 5. But the switch performance is very slow; unless you do a primer puff first, the switch takes as long as two seconds to respond. Furthermore, the switch fades out consistently after only 2 or 3 seconds, then fades back in, so you can’t take a long drag. For my puff counts, for example, I had to take my 5-second inhalation in two pieces. I can only give it a 3 out of 5.
In fairness, with the amount of vapor these produce, you don’t need a long inhalation. One hard sharp primer puff, followed by just a second or two long drag, is actually plenty. Using that technique, the poor switch performance is not much of an issue, otherwise I would have rated it even lower. Still, a better performing battery delivers a much more satisfying experience, as I will get to shortly.
I only did a couple of puff counts because, as I said I couldn’t really get a good 5-second inhalation anyway. But I got about 70 puffs per battery, and about 120 puffs per cartridge. Using the double puff method, I got around 140-150 puffs per battery, and 225-250 per cartridge. That’s about one pack per cartridge, and about 2 batteries per cartridge. Typically a battery would last from 2-3 hours of heavy use, to 5 or 6 hours of moderate use, and a cartridge from 6 to 12 hours. I was using 1 ½ to 2 cartridges most days, some days 3.
Overall reliability, as I mentioned before, was a bit of a disappointment to me. Out of the 57 cartridges I tried, several, at least 8 to 10, were bad out of the box. I didn’t keep exact count, but a couple would do nothing but spit liquid, a couple did nothing at all, a couple died after only 20 puffs or so, and a couple had a foul, burnt fabric taste right from the start. And a few more would spit a small amount of liquid along with the vapor, enough to leave a bad aftertaste. Defective cartridges can be returned for exchange, though.
Besides bad cartridges, qualities like ease of draw and how well the battery responds would vary, and these variations would be consistent by flavors. The Menthol had the hardest draw, the Coffee the easiest, for example. I presume that means the variations are due to different production batches.
Nonetheless, most cartridges, at least 4 out of 5, are good, and do deliver that perfect tons o vapor performance, so I give it a 4 for overall reliability.
And appearance, well, it is a basic fake cigarette look, and that’s only a 3, average.
That all averages out to an overall score of 3.4. The score would have been better with better batteries, and again, in fairness, with a quick hard primer puff and a short inhalation, the battery performance is acceptable, and the vapor production and short drags make it a great e-smoke.
I don’t normally mention flavors, because you can normally use any liquid you want. But here you’re kinda locked in. Smoke 51 has only 5 flavors, Tobacco, Menthol, Vanilla, Coffee, and Chocolate. More variety than real cigs, but very limiting compared to other e-cig models.
And they have only 4 strengths; zero nicotine, 4mg, 6mg, and 8mg. I am not sure whether that’s per 1ml or per cartridge. I think one cartridge is 1ml, so it may be the same thing, but I’m not sure.
So, some cartridges fail, performance varies, batteries are poor, and they have limited flavors and strengths. But on the positive side, it’s an amazing vapor producer, it’s the only e-cig that will allow a short drag like a real cig, and it’s a very satisfying e-smoking experience.
So can I recommend it? Yes, but not wholeheartedly.
Despite all its weaknesses, on the whole I like the Smoke 51, and enjoyed using it. So, I do want to recommend it. But I can’t give it a whole hearted recommendation, I do have to give it the caveat that I would recommend it more if the batteries were better.
[EDIT 3-9-09: Just before my computer crashed, I received a new set of batteries which were a big improvement over the first set I based this review on. They have a lighter draw, and don't need such a hard primer puff, but the switch is slow to start and slow to cut off after the puff. All in all, they aren't perfect, but are much better than the old ones. I can recommend them more highly now, and will re-do my review when I can.]

Leaford's NEW Five Favorites
Last Updated on Saturday, 24 January 2009 11:07 Written by leaford Saturday, 24 January 2009 11:07
Leaford's NEW Five Favorite E-Cigarettes
#1) LoongTotem v9 and/or compatable:
These are the disposable atomizer/cartridge combination devices. They are available from Smoke51, ePuffer (as the EAZE Magnum), and from e-Cig.com (as the New Mini-Ecig).
Why I Love Them- Vapor, tons and tons of vapor. And the long cartridge life, easily equivalent to a pack.
The Downside- Most of the batteries are poor, many cartridges fail, or don’t last as long as they should, and all of it is expensive.
My reccomendations: Get the Starter Kits and batteries from ePuffer, and use Discount Code LEAFORD for 5% off. Get the cartridges from Smoke 51, and use Discount Code DSC-240 for 30% off. E-cig.com has the lowest prices and largest variety of strengths and flavors, but have a bad track record for quality and service, so are not reccomended, but if you do choose them, please use my affiliate link, E-Cig.com
In addition, there are two new retailers who are reselling E-Cig.com’s New Minicig. I have not yet reviewed either one, but don’t expect them to be much different than the ones I ordered directly.
They are Red Dragon and Bloog. LEAFORD works as a discount code at both; 5% off at Red Dragon, and 20% off at Bloog.
#2) DSE-601 E-Pipe:
These are available from Litecig, LitecigUSA, and ecigarettemall. All three offer warranties.
Why I Love Them: Long lasting cartridges and batteries. About a pack to a pack and a half worth per cartridge, and a battery that lasts up to a whole day.
The Downside: Non-removable atomizer, so if it fails you have to replace the whole body. Big, bulky to carry.
My Reccomendations: In the US, purchase from www.LitecigUSA.com for &79.95, in Europe from www.Litecig.com, and from www.ecigarettemall.com for $75 (use Discount Code DH for 5% off) in Asia/Pacific.
#3) “Perfect 5” Penstyles:
These are the penstyles that I rate at a perfect 5 for atomizer performance, both 5 out of 5 for vapor and ease of draw. Sedansa Diva, Janty Classic, and the DSE801 from ecigarettemall (or ecigmall) all perform at that level. I pair these with a USB manual switch battery from the Janty KISSbox at home, and out and about I use the Sedansa Diva’s extra long life batteries.
Why I Love Them: Outstanding vapor, USB power source convenience, longer lasting batteries than most penstyles.
The Downside: none really.
My Reccomendations: The Sedansa Diva from www.Sedansa.eu for 92 Euro, The Janty Extended Classic KISSBox from www.jantyusa.com for $134.95 or from www.jantyshop.com for 99.95 Euro, or the DSE-801 Manual Switch from www.ecigarettemall.com for $79 (use Discount Code DH for 5%off)
#4) DSE-901:
More of an honorable mention than a favorite since I seldom use it anymore. This is the best e-cig for a beginner, IMO.
Why I Love Them: It gives you a good introduction to the basic techniques of e-smoking, is cheap and reliable, and produces a satisfying amount of vapor. Easy to refill or drip.
The Downside: Shorter cartridge and battery life than a penstyle.
My reccomendations: It’s widely available, but www.LitecigUSA.com, www.Litecig.com, www.E-Smokeytreats.com, www.ecigarettemall.com and www.ecigmall.com are all under $50 and all offer 6 to 7 month warranties.
#5) M401:
This is a newer model, and hasn’t quite earned the reputation for reliability that the DSE901 has, but it is a good contender to be the 901 killer. It outperforms the current crop of 901s in vapor production, and has similar battery and cartridge life. It is available from Litecig, and from at least one Chinese seller. There is also a heavily modified version from Intellicig, which is getting great reviews.
Why I Love Them: Cheap, small and light, excellent penstyle-like vapor.
The Downside: Shorter cartridge and battery life than a penstyle. A bit harder to drip or refill than the 901.
My Reccomedations: Available from www.LitecigUSA.com, and www.Litecig.com in Europe for $49.95 Euro.

Welcome to Leaford's E-Cigarette Blog
Last Updated on Saturday, 24 January 2009 01:17 Written by leaford Saturday, 24 January 2009 01:17
For those who don’t know me, I’m Leaford,
I was a one to two pack a day smoker for over 15 years. I never really tried seriously to quit, I enjoyed it too much. Not everything about it, no. I hated the constant hacking and wheezing. I hated the smell on all my clothes, my drapes, my skin. I hated my smokey room, and all the dust, and ashes, and butts, and dirty ashtrays. The yellow film on my teeth and my TV. And I hated the fact that I KNEW it could kill me someday, and some mornings felt like it would right then.
But I loved the quick pick-me-up in the mornings, the increased alertness, the decreased stress, and slight buzz of the nicotine. I loved the feel of the smoke rolling down my throat, filling my lungs, and then the satisfaction of the exhale, seeing the cloud of smoke billowing away into the air. I loved seeing the smoke curling around in the air, illuminated by stray shafts of early morning sunlight. I liked the flavor of a menthol, and had learned to like the taste of tobacco.
I loved smoking, and didn’t really want to quit.
But I was also a loving owner to two wonderful Parrots, Mike, my 14 year old Timneh African Grey, and Jamie, my 13 year old Peach-Faced Lovebird. And then, one heart-breaking morning, I got home from work, and found Jamie dead at the bottom of her cage.
Lovebirds live up to 15 years, so she was getting up there, anyway. But I couldn’t help but wonder if my selfish habit had stolen the last couple of years from her life.
I didn’t want to keep taking that chance with Mike. African Greys have been known to live up to 70 years. 40 years is more common. I was determined to give Mike a better shot at outliving me.
But I still loved smoking and dreaded quitting. I tried cold turkey, but failed. I am a chronic insomniac, and the inceased insmnia from withdrawl was crippling. I discussed nicotine therapy with my doctor but they were more expensive than cigs and didn’t sound worth it. She told me about Chantix causing hallucinations (sounded fun!) and suicidal tendancies (less fun).
I decided to see if I could at least address the second hand smoke Mike was breathing, and which was stinking up my clothes. So I searched on Froogle for “smokeless ashtray” to see if those had improved since the late 70’s. And among the results was an electronic cigarette Supermini from Heavens Gifts on E-Bay.
I ordered that, and less than a week later an E-Cigarillo from E-Cig.com, and then later a Crown7, before I found http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com and found info on some GOOD e-cigarettes. I was always a gadget junkie and a shopaholic anyways, so it wasn’t long before I had several more.
And soon after that I started I began doing reviews.
It’s been almost 10 months now, and around 8 months since I started reviewing, and I’ve done around 2 dozen, most with video demos.
Those who know my work can attest that I have earned a reputation for being very thorough, comprehensive, honest, and unbiased. The suppliers who have dealt with me can attest that I can be very demanding of my devices. I insist it work well by several standards of performance measurement. And I have zero brand loyalty. My favorite product today will be cast by the wayside as soon as something that performs better comes along.
I have lost track of how many devices I have tried. Dozens, at least. Many more than I have had time to review. And I have shared freely all that experience with you; from e-cig beginners, to e-cig veterans and community members.
Now, at long last, this journey has led me to the blogosphere, and this website.
I am trying my hand at this, and one goal will be to generate a revenue stream to help me fund the purchase of more new devices, upgrading my video and photo equipment, and hopefully some surplus for myself.
I have signed up for affiliate accounts, and will make those codes and links available in my reviews and posts. All I ask for all the work I do to do these reviews and bring them to you is that if you choose a product based on one of my reviews, please use my link or code to buy it.
I am commited to maintaining my reputation for honesty and impartiality, and for comprehensively evaluating all the pros and cons of each device, and giving all that information to you. I will make my best, honest recomendations, regardless of affiliate status. And I will openly label all reviews and posts featuring products from sellers I have an affiliate account with.
And, as a check on my honesty, I will keep my reviewing history intact, so you can always compare what I am saying now against what I said before I had financial interests.
Money is nice, but I did this for a long time, at my own expense, for no more reward than the respect and credibility I earned in your eyes. And I find that means more to me than money.
So if you like my reviews, and decide to purchase any of the devices, please use the links or codes I provide. In return I am trying to arrange for discounts on your purchases. And I will be devoting even more time and effort to these reviews, and a lot more, to repay the entire e-cig community.
So to my old forum and Youtube friends, I am confident nothing will change in your eyes. Except for the better. And to beginning e-smokers, or the curious, welcome! I hope you will find my reviews and advice helpful.
Great things are coming, and I hope you’ll all be along for the ride!
