Nice article about Johnson Creek Smoke Juice
Last Updated on Monday, 21 June 2010 05:13 Written by leaford Monday, 21 June 2010 05:13
I remember the old days on ECF, when Christian first started Johnson Creek. We were all so excited about the first US made e-liquids. Good times…

Electronic cigarette flavors are catching fire
Johnson Creek — Christian Berkey was a nearly two-pack-a-day smoker when he heard about electronic cigarettes, a device that vaporizes a solution of water, nicotine and flavoring without the smoke and the combustion. Berkey went on the Internet and ordered the device. “I was stunned. I took a puff, and it gave me the same experience as cigarettes,” Berkey said. “It looked like smoke coming out, but you can’t smell it. It addressed the tactile sensation of smoking.” There was one problem.
“I was not thrilled by the taste,” he said. “Chinese smoke juice had a chemical aspect to it.”
Berkey decided he could do better. He wasn’t worried about perfecting the pen-like device, which carries a battery and usually has an LED light on the end. He believed the solution to a successful smoking experience was to make the smoke juice taste better.
Berkey went to work, testing various formulas and trying to improve the taste. That was in November 2007. By February 2008, he started to see some results. Two months and countless variations later, he found the formula he liked.
Unlike the Chinese version, which contains countless ingredients, Berkey’s formula was simple, using only seven ingredients.
In July 2008, Berkey quit his job as a manager of an Apple retail store and took the plunge.
He started to talk about his product on online forums devoted to e-cigarettes. He offered consumers free samples. The feedback he was getting was good.
“They loved it,” he said. “No one wanted to touch the Chinese stuff.”
I do take a bit of exception to Christian’s harping on “the Chinese stuff,” especially over the number of ingredients. You want to reduce your ingredients from “countless” to “seven?” Just lump them all together as “flavorings.” But that’s marketing, no serious criticism. Christian was the first one to make non-chinese e-liquids, and big kudos to him for it.

How do you clean cartomizers?

Personally, I don’t clean. I mean I don’t clean anything. I am the biggest slob you’ll ever meet. So, I’m not the best one to talk about cleaning cartos.
Instead, I’ll just point you to a great video made by ECF member Nilius:

Minnesota passes law banning electronic cigarette sales to kids.
Last Updated on Wednesday, 12 May 2010 09:07 Written by leaford Wednesday, 12 May 2010 07:16
Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty has signed into law a bill banning sales to minors of several tobacco and non-tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes.
Sponsored by by Senator Scott Dibble and Representative Jim Davnie of Minneapolis, the Tobacco Modernization and Compliance Act of 2010 also covers some of the new tobacco products such as orbs, strips, lozenges and snus made by our “friends” in Big Tobacco.
In a press statement Sen. Dibble said, ”The face of the tobacco industry is rapidly changing, and we need to ensure Minnesota’s laws and regulations keep up with that pattern. Right now, there are products being test-marketed, with children as the intended consumers, that were never envisioned when we wrote our tobacco laws decades ago. There is no such thing as a safe tobacco product, and we need to ensure that we have laws in place to make sure these new products are regulated and kept out of the hands of our kids.”
While I take issue with the statement that children are the intended consumers, at least in the case of e-cigs, it is true that in the current legal grey zone e-cigarettes are in, their sale to minors are unregulated in most states. While the vast majority of e-cig retailers, including Vapor4Life of course, are responsible and do not market or sell to children, I fully agree that it should be illegal to sell them to minors.
Sen. Dibbler also said, “This bill is simply designed to keep harmful products out of the hands of children. No product is banned or otherwise prohibited.” This is exactly the type of reasonable and moderate regulation that our industry NEEDS, and I applaud Sen. Dibble, Rep. Davnie, and the government of Minnesota for it.
Between this and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s recent opinion finding that e-cigs are not subject to indoor smoking laws, I am feeling very optimistic about our prospect in the ongoing battle between government and e-smokers.
Oh, well, I’m sure the feeling will pass.

Meet the V4L crew.
Last Updated on Friday, 30 April 2010 10:58 Written by leaford Friday, 30 April 2010 10:58
Hi everyone!
I’ve been back in the states for a couple weeks now, and am currently working in the Vapor4Life offices in Chicago, meeting all the new crew, learning about our inventory, stocking, and order fulfillment procedures.
Vapor4Life has sure grown since I joined. Lots of new faces. Last time I was here we had a small team of 6, now we have 11 people in the office, 2 more working outside the office, me in China, and now we’ve even brought in an engineering firm to help us create the next generation of e-cigs combining the best of Chinese and American know-how.
I’ll be heading back to China in a day or two, and I’m very excited about what we have planned for when I get back. But I can’t say too much about that just yet.
So in the meantime, I thought you’d like to meet the crew!
First of all, of course, is the heart and soul of V4L, our founder and Vapor King, Steve (who has been unaccountably photo-shy this week).
And his lovely wife, our Vapor Queen, Mel:
Mark, our VP of IT an Customer Service:
And his lovely wife Christie:
VP of Operations, Mariano:
And we’ve been joined by Mark’s sister Traci, and her friends James and Jonathon, who all joined the crew back around December and January, and work on stocking and order fulfillment:
Wade, who many of you may know from ECF as Wader2k has been with us in February, and is now fielding our customer service calls:
And latest but not least, Bob, and his cousin Tim, who also work on stocking and order fulfillment:
As you can see, we’re still very much a family operation, and will always be, no matter how large we grow. Besides being drawn from family and friends, most of our team are vapers. We use our products ourselves, and are all committed to the future of the industry and to the success of our customers, our extended V4L family.
I enjoyed my time back home, and I’ve enjoyed being here this past week. But I’m eager to get back to China and back to work improving our product. I have unfinished projects to complete, like a multi-battery charger, a 5v battery, and of course the much-delayed VK1. And we have a lot of other plans, as I mentioned above. Exciting things are ahead! And I’ll do my best to bring you all along for the ride!
